Designing a Change and Configuration Management Infrastructure


This course provides students with the design skills required to successfully evaluate an organization and create a change and configuration management strategy.

Topics include; the benefits and business reasons for designing a change and configuration infrastructure, analysis of the business operating system needs, methods for software distribution, user data management and user settings, computer management and group policy. The students will complete a number of design labs that are intended to use the change and configuration management methodology taught in the modules.

Audience
This course is intended for individuals from two different groups of IT Professionals. The first group is the Technology Architects. This group is responsible for Active Directory™ design and typically holds the skills of a network engineer, or a Microsoft Windows® Server specialist. They will have the skills to implement Windows 2000 features in an enterprise environment. The other group is the Windows  desktop engineer, who holds the skills of planning and designing the users' desktop configurations who are responsible for Web site infrastructure design.

At Course Completion
After completing the course, students will be able to:
Understand change and configuration management methodology.
Evaluate operating system installation and upgrade options based on business needs, and the current and planned environment.
Evaluate software distribution and management options based on business needs, and the current and planned environment.
Evaluate user data management options based on business needs, and the current and planned environment.
Evaluate user settings management options based on business needs, and the current and planned environment.
Evaluate computer management options based on business needs, and the current and planned environment.
Evaluate group policy management options based on business needs, and the current and planned environment.

Module 1: Introduction to Change and Configuration Design

After completing this module, you will understand change and configuration management methodology. This includes:

Defining the customer's current environment.
Defining the customer's business needs.
Identify an appropriate course of action to meet the desired business needs.

Module 2: Designing a Workstation Installation and Upgrade Strategy
The following topics are covered in this module:
Determining the Current Environment
Determining the Organizational Requirements
Identify Installation Options
Assessing the Appropriate Options
After completing this module, you will be able to assess current operating system environments and produce an appropriate plan for the install, or upgrade, to Windows 2000 Professional desktops. This includes:

Determine the current business operating system environment.
Determine if a clean install or an upgrade is required.
Identify possible operating system install and upgrade options.
Select the appropriate options that would meet desired business needs.

Module 3: Designing a Software Distribution and Management Strategy

Determining Software Management Strategies
Identify Available Options
Assessing the Appropriate Options
After completing this module, you will be able to assess an organization's software distribution management methodology, and its current and future software deployment needs. This includes:

Determine how the organization currently manages software distribution.
Determine how the organization needs to manage software distribution.
Identify possible software distribution options.
Select the appropriate options that would meet desired business needs.

Module 4: Designing a User Data Management Strategy

After completing this module, you will be able to evaluate user data management options based on business needs, and the current and planned environment. This includes:
